How to Unblock Websites the Easy Way

Have you ever been at work or school getting bored when all of a sudden you get that urge to get onto the computer and check your social networking accounts? You get on the computer in your little cubicle, hoping for your chance to see whats going on in the real world right now. You open up the browser, type in the address of your social networking site, hit enter.. and to your surprise, a screen shows up telling you that the site is blocked. Frantically, you try the others, and all of them are blocked as well. What are you going to do now? Well.. unfortunately, it is becoming easier and easier for network administrators to block websites on their networks. The use of things like IPSEC and the hosts file in windows allow them to block you from browsing freely with a single click of a button. Because sites like twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and YouTube are considered "distractions" to you while you are at work or school, they are the ones to be blocked most often. And unfortunately to you, those are the sites that you like the most.

The good news is, there is a very simple and quick way to bypass network filters and blocks and get your freedom on the web back very easily. The solution is using a web proxy to access the web. A web proxy is a website that has the ability to bypass any filters and blocks that the network administrator may have set up. The best part is, web proxies do not require any type of installation or setup on your computer! This means you can browse the web freely without your network administrator ever even finding out! The only problem you may find with using proxies, is that sometimes, they even get blocked by your admin. What are you going to do now?

Well, there is another very simple solution, a web proxy list! Web proxy lists are websites that generally contain a large list of proxy sites that have been submitted by proxy webmasters all over the world. This is a great resource to use when you are in a situation where your administrator has blocked the proxy websites that you have been using, because you will always have another one available to use! Another great way to get the freshest proxies delivered directly to your email in-box is joining a Proxy Google Group. You will have the latest and freshest proxies to use in your email account each and every time that you log on. You can even follow a proxy robot on twitter to see proxies as they are added to the proxy list. This means you are really getting the freshest and newest proxies to use each and every time.

How to Unblock Websites the Easy Way

So, if you aren't convinced that web proxies are absolutely the best way to unblock websites that have been blocked by your network administrator, i don't know why. They are certainly the quickest and easiest way to browse the web securely, freely, and safely no matter where you are.

I hope you enjoy your new found freedom on the web!

How To Set Up An Outlook Express Filter

When I began my anti spam crusade, I had assumed that most people online could competently do things such as set up a spam filter in Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. It turns out this is not so, the fear of making adjustment to the default settings getting the better of quite a majority of the population, or else just never having the time or inclination to get in and figure it out.

Luckily it is quite an easy process, and even the most computer-ese challenged amongst us can get it done easily once we understand how to it works. In this little how-to I am going to give an example how to set up a filter using Outlook Express, purely on the basis that this is the program open on my desktop as I type this.

There are two parts to a filter - a condition, and an action. The condition defines the set of circumstances that will trigger the action. The action is of course what happens when the circumstances described in the condition are true.

How To Set Up An Outlook Express Filter

The example I will use here is to delete messages with [SPAM] in the title. My ISP once went through a rather silly phase of not deleting spam - but marking it in the header and leaving the deletions to us. It seems they too had made an assumption that all their customers could set up a filter to handle the hundreds of [SPAM] marked messages they suddenly started receiving. They were quickly put right but overloaded switchboards.

So we are going to create a simple filter in Outlook Express that deletes everything with [SPAM] in the title.

Step 1: Click on the menu Item Tools. Point at Message Rules and select(click on) mail...
A small new window will open with the heading Message Rules and three tabs. The Mail... tab will be selected.

Step 2: Click on the New... button.
Another new window opens with the titlebar New Mail Rule. There are 4 boxes to fill in.

Step 3: In the first white box Click in the square beside "Where the Subject line contains specific word".
A tick will appear in the box. You will notice the 3rd box gets some more writing in it, we will deal with that soon.

Step 4: In the second white box click in the square next to Delete It.
A tick will appear in the box. The text in the third white box will now read: Apply this rule after the message arrives, Where the Subject line contains specific words, Delete it. The words 'contains specific words will be blue and underlined.

Step 5: In the third white box click on the blue underlined words 'contains specific words'.
A new window will open with the title bar Type Specific Words.

Step 6: In the first box in this window type [SPAM]. Click Add. Click Okay.
You will be returned to the previous window. The third box will now contain the text: Apply this rule after the message arrives Where the Subject line contains '[SPAM]' Delete it

Step 7: In the fourth Box type a userfriendly name for your spam filter. I use "Delete [SPAM] rule". Click the OK button.
After clicking okay you are taken back to the message rules window. Click OK here and your filter is added. Well Done.

As far as I am aware there is no limit to the number of filters you can apply. The important thing to remember is that the filter doesn't discriminate. If the result returns true then the action (Deleting in this case) will be applied.

Happy filtering.

Software Programs Every Laptop Should Have

We know that laptop computers are portable, convenient, and very necessary in today's fast-paced world. A laptop gives its owner a renewed sense of freedom and capability. With a strong wireless Internet connection, business may be conducted from anywhere in the world. Cubicle walls expand to reveal wide open spaces, where people may communicate, shop, and accomplishment countless tasks.

Choosing the right laptop to suit your needs may take time and research, but one thing is for certain: all laptop owners should have the basic programs installed to get through daily life and work. Whether you are a writer, a computer programmer, a businessman, or work at home, these four programs are irreplaceable and versatile. Each should have a shortcut icon right on your startup screen.

Let's take a look at what you need:

Software Programs Every Laptop Should Have

Word Processing Program

You don't have to be a student to need a good word processing program. Can you think of a day where you haven't written anything? Even for a one-page note, it is hand to have a word processing program installed to suit your needs.

These days, many computers come equipped with such software, though what is included may not necessarily meet your requirements. While all programs allow you to type, save, edit and print with ease, some programs go the extra mile and allow you to enhance presentations with embedded imagery, video, and font manipulation. Microsoft Word, as part of the Office Suite, lets you these things and more. A simpler program will limit the boundaries.

As you shop for your next laptop, consider what word processing packages are included, and determine if you need an upgrade.

Accounting Software

Whether you use the laptop primarily for business or household purposes, a good accounting program can serve as a solid backup for your traditional system of bookkeeping. Using accounting software to keep track of your income, bills and other expenditures is a good way to maintain organized focus throughout the year. You condition yourself to keep better track of your finances, and should you lose any paper you have that backup to consult onscreen.

Quickbooks is one example of such a program, and offers various features for whatever organizational purposes you seek. If the laptop you buy does not include accounting software, consider looking for some.

Electronic Book/Document Reader

Electronic book, or e-book, technology has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years. With the Gutenburg project, students and other avid readers have access to thousands of classic and academic texts, and third-party retailers like Fictionwise and Amazon.com offer instant downloads of electronic novels for sale. With a laptop, you can shop for a book, purchase and download, and read it instantly. You don't even have to be in a bookstore!

That said, with certain e-book formats you will need specific readers. A PDF document will not open in a word processing program, and an e-book formatted for the Microsoft Reader will not open in Adobe Reader. Therefore, it is wise to keep such programs on hand in the event you need or want to read a book from your screen. The best thing about such programs is that they are offered for free by their respective companies. A quick Internet search will lead you in the right direction.

Security Software

No laptop is complete without a strong security program. As viruses and spyware become more prevalent and more sophisticated, the need to protect your computer is very important. Especially if you are a frequent user, you would be best suited to a program that offers anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall capabilities. Options to filter junk mail and prevent annoying pop-up advertisements is also a plus.

Not every computer system will offer such protection, so be sure to consult with a sales person before buying. Make sure your security programs are updated often to combat new issues.

From composing mail to battling SPAM, your laptop should be ready to do everything you need. Take care when shopping and don't forget these essentials when you are ready to work.

Here is What to Do When Your Computer Crashes

It is extremely frustrating and annoying when your computer crashes. This is an all too common occurrence. Unfortunately when this happens most people do not know what to do. Here is help so what to do when your computer crashes and how to prevent it in the future.

Knowing that computer crashes are inevitable it is important save your work regularly. There is nothing worse than losing valuable data or a document you have spent time working on, because your computer crashes unexpectedly.

So what causes a crash and what can you do when your computer crashes?

Here is What to Do When Your Computer Crashes

The first thing you need to do when your computer crashes is to ascertain the reason behind it. This can often be difficult if the computer completely shuts down or goes to a black screen. But if you pay close attention you will be clued in to the symptoms and signs that may help you to store your data and also prevent a crash.

Be sure to resist any emotional response when your computer crashes. Some people think tapping or hitting their computer can fix the problem. Others experience rage and want to throw it out the window. Neither action will help matters.

On most occasions your computer crashes when because it gets over heated. The intense heat generated causes your computer to temporarily shut down in order to cool the system and re boot again. You need to be cautious with over-heating problems as intense heat generated can result in hardware damage or even failure needing you to replace a drive.

If your computer is stored in an area that does not get good ventilation it can over heat easily. Also, if the computer housing has a fan at the back and it gets covered with dust this will not allow air to flow properly and that can lead to over-heating.

A surge in the power supply can also cause your computer to crash as it cannot handle the excess power. In severe cases your computer may not power up at all. This can usually be avoided by using a surge protector power strip.

Software problems involving viruses or software conflicts can also be the cause of computer crashes. These are problems a computer technician is best at solving.

Another common cause for a computer crash is the one involving the registry files of your personal computer. Very few personal computer users are aware of the registry folder that sorts, stores and keeps track of all the valuable information on the software and hardware, including drive space and other programs that are essential for your computer to run smoothly.

Registry database is perhaps the most frequently used as well as the most important part of the "Windows" operating system. It is also the biggest cause of most computer errors and computer crashes. This is because "Windows" requires accessing the registry database for everything.

Hundreds of registry files are opened edited or in use every time that Windows perform any task on your computer. That sometimes creates confusion leading to improper saving of such files. As a result these files often get damaged or even corrupted. So the Windows find it difficult to read such files which slows down your personal computer and leads in error message or a total computer crash.

The way to prevent registry computer crashes is the use of a registry cleaning device on a regular basis, and defragmenting your computer once in a while. Once you download a good registry cleaning device and schedule it to clean your computer at least once a week, your computer will run more efficiently with fewer error messages and not crash as often.

The Top Twelve Threats No Computer User Should Ignore

The internet is undoubtedly a fantastic resource for families and offers a rich vein of educational content.

However, there are potential dangers - welcome to the seedy world of viruses, spam, trojans, pornography, spyware and other nasties.

These are the Top Twelve Threats No Computer User Should Ignore.

The Top Twelve Threats No Computer User Should Ignore

1. Viruses - A computer program that copies itself. They often disrupt your computer system or damage your data. Viruses are usually received by email attachments so be careful opening anything from a dubious source. They can affect anyone, for example, the destructive Mydoom worm affected one out of three small and mid-sized businesses.

2. Spyware - Sends information about you and your computer to somebody else. Spyware may send the addresses of sites you have visited or worse still, transmit personal information. With today's concerns about identify theft this is a real worry. For example, CoolWebSearch may hijack web searches, home page, and other Internet Explorer settings. Spyware is normally received as part of shareware or freeware downloaded from the web.

3. IP Spoofing - A technique to gain unauthorized access to computers, whereby the intruder sends messages to a computer with an address indicating that the message is coming from a trusted host.

4. Trojans - An apparently legitimate computer program that is really intended to disrupt and damage computer activity by sending information, perhaps even passwords onto a third party without you knowing. As an example, recent emails entitled "Osama Bin Laden Captured" attempted to download the "Trj/Small.B." Trojan if the embedded URL was clicked. This trojan attempts to hijack the PC.

5. Spam - Unsolicited mail often promoting products of a dubious financial or sexual nature. Don't leave your email address on websites and internet bulletin boards as they are harvested by spammers.

6. Adware - puts advertisements on your screen. These take many forms including popups, popunders and advertisements that appear later, even if your browser is closed. Some are sent using the Windows Messenger service which allows a spammer to direct an advertisement straight to your computer by sequentially sending messages to IP addresses. Always irritating, they are also often of a pornographic nature.

7. Diallers - for those of us still with dial up modems, dialler programs redirect calls to a very expensive number. You won't know until you get the bill.

8. Hijackers - Hijackers take control of your web browser and may reset your home page, search bar and search pages. They can redirect you to undesirable sites or stop you going to particular sites.

9. Hackers - With so much personal data available online to anyone with a password you must be sure your password is secure. If you are using your mother's maiden name, your cat's name or your birthday then your password is at risk. Here are two tips for making a secure password. Method One - pick two random unrelated three letter words and two digits. Mix them up and what do you have? A secure password such as "red19cat" or "hotpin73". Method Two - pick a short sequence of words such as Now Is The Winter Of Our Discontent Made Glorious' and you have a password of "nitwoodmg". You could even change the I's and O's to digits.

10. Phishing - Emails purporting to come from reliable sources such as Paypal, eBay or your bank. Often wanting you to verify your account details, they can look very realistic but are generally scams to harvest usernames and passwords. Always open a new browser winder and type the address there, rather than clicking on the link provided.

11. Hoaxes - Chain letters, scams, false alarms. At best they take up time and bandwidth but at worst vulnerable can be victims of fraud. Pass it on!

12. Stranger-danger - For those of us with children - do you know what they actually do when they are online? Are they working on homework tasks, downloading illegal music or pornography? Or are they chatting to strangers in chat rooms? You should consider blocking access to undesirable sites and logging their activity with a surveillance tool. Oh, and don't forget that where children are concerned, computers should always be kept in a family room and never in their bedroom.

Three Step Action Plan

There are three basic, essential steps that should be taken to ensure your PC is kept threat-free.

Firstly , be sensible when opening attachments or following email instructions from apparently reputable sites.

Secondly , make sure you are using the latest service pack of Windows as Microsoft is continually closing loopholes to tighten up security.

Finally, there's a range of low cost tools such as firewalls, antivirus, spam blockers and spyware killers available. Like everything else they vary in quality and you tend to get what you pay for so always do your research first and perhaps try a free trial before getting your credit card out.

Spam Filter - Where You Can Get Free Spam Blocker

Spam are junk emails sent to numerous recipients and the emails are usually aimed to advertise something or to scam people such as the 419 scam. Spammers use zombie computers to send junk emails to avoid being detected.

This type of emails are annoying and a waste of time. In order to get rid of it, you need to get an email filter and here's how you can get it for free.

1. The Free Email Accounts

Spam Filter - Where You Can Get Free Spam Blocker

You can get free email account from almost anywhere. Just type in your search engines for free email accounts and you will find tons of websites offering it. But, in this article, I will mention two providers that can provide you junk emails filter for free.

The free email account on Gmail and Yahoo Email provide spam protection and filters for free and the filters are able to choose between junk emails or real emails. However, the junk emails sometimes will end up in your inbox folder or the real emails will sometimes end up in the bulk folder. But it's enough to protect your inbox and will save you a lot of time. So, if you want to have a free email filter, use either these two providers.

2. Free Protection Software

Other than using free email accounts, there are also junk emails filtering software that can filter the bulk emails from coming to your inbox. I used PopTray to do this. It will check your POP email accounts for every 5 minutes.

PopTray can also check the raw body for every emails that you've received. This will also prevent you from clicking any links in a phishing email because you can see where the links pointed to. It also has rules feature where you can set the rules for spam emails and it will filter it for you.

You can choose either to automatically delete spam every time it comes to your inbox or you can choose to delete it manually. After you've set the rules, any emails matching the rules will immediately deleted or marked as junk.

Another software for filtering bulk email is MailWasher.
